The Beauty In Trying New Things

All he wanted to do for his birthday was fish. So of course this city girl obliged! I'm always down for an adventure (especially with the bf) and this time was no different. The destination? Mammoth Lakes, CA.

So I set out on a Friday morning to fly into Los Angeles so we could drive together to Mammoth. I absolutely fell in love with the area! It had all the charm of a small town, the shops and scenery were straight out of a magazine. Most of the inhabitants were once from the city and moved up to the mountains because they craved a more relaxed environment. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful.

Day one we stopped by The Trout Fitter so he could purchase some flies. I learned so much about fishing that weekend! For one, you want to get the flies that you will use once you get to the area that you're fishing in. The bait shops generally make flies that are local to the area. This is something that I would've never thought of. Of course, he did all his research prior to our trip!

Our cabin (rented on @AirBnB) backed up to a seasonal horse stable. I think we both said we would definitely want to return and make a summer trip.. not only to fish but to see the horses! The cabin was adorable and compact, having everything we needed. I enjoyed waking up and making breakfast in the kitchen and being able to see these gorgeous snow covered mountains through the window while cooking.

The actual experience of fishing was so peaceful! We got to the river early and watched the sun rise, thankfully having the whole place to ourselves. I know @cappohoncho enjoyed the open space even more than the two of us. He was able to roam the whole morning without a care in the world!

Unfortunately we were unable to catch any fish. It was his first time fly fishing and my second time fishing.. EVER. Beginners luck didn't favor us this time but it's ok. Either way it was a great experience and a much needed escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I would return to explore more of the lake side and I'm seriously interested in trying my hand and skiing/snowboarding on the mountain.

Also, we stopped and had Bishop Burger Barn on the way back to L.A.. I love supporting a small business when travelling! The food and shakes were delicious (they came highly recommended on @yelp). It was the perfect ending to a great weekend trip. We will definitely be back Mammoth Lakes!
